Zinn, Close Reading, and Closing out Strong

The Close Reading Assignment on Howard Zinn heads into the home stretch this week.  To date, I have read rough drafts from just over 52% of the students on the team.  Many of these students have submitted more than one draft, have spent lunch periods asking questions about the assessment, and have even arrived before school to get feedback on their work.  It has been great to witness so many students becoming such strong advocates of their writing and learning.  Close Reading has become associated with the most arduous of work.  It has also become associated with the most brutal of work and the loudest of groans, but that is another issue for another time.
We have more to go this week.  Students can submit rough drafts until Monday night at 7:00 and can do so over the weekend.  I anticipate that our number will climb.  It is my hope that it will move steadily up and you can help in this process.  Encourage your student to submit a rough draft of their work so they can receive my feedback.  All work is due Friday the 13th, an appropriate date for a most challenging assignment.  It's almost as if the calendar gods conspired to collect work.
